Friday, September 19 was our niece´s thirteenth birthday! The family came together at my brother and sister-in-law´s house to celebrate Rebecca, and like all Nørgaard gatherings I have been to so far, it was a great night! Turning 13 is a big deal and I am glad I had the opportunity to share it with Rebecca!
Birthday traditions in Denmark are something I love about Danish culture. The Danes usually celebrate birthdays with a birthday meal, birthday song, and of course, Dannebrog everywhere!! The stores in Denmark have "birthday sales" all the time and I think it is only because they love to display Dannebrog!!
Mads called Rebecca the first thing Friday morning to sing "Happy Birthday" to her. Each family birthday I realize I MUST learn the words to it before Mads´ birthday in two weeks, so I made a "song flag card" to help me!
After we sang the traditional birthday song, everyone sang the American song...in Danish!

Mads and I and his brother´s family gave Rebecca something for her Wii.
Og for Onkel Mads at spille!
And for Uncle Mads to play!
Mogens, hendes far, synger ”back up” imens Rebecca spiller Aerosmiths musik!
Mogens, her dad, sings back up” while Rebecca plays Aerosmith´s music!

Whoo hoo I love guitar hero even though it can be a little addiction. I agree. Danes do love their flag. I also love walking to the stores and seeing it all decorated with the Dannebrog.
It always amazes me how a kid grows up so quickly. Thirteen year old girl nowadays look like sixteen or seventeen. I remember that I was very childish-looking and dorky when I was 13 LOL
Yeah, Guitar Hero! Such a fun and addictive game. You all will have to pitch in for a 2nd guitar 'cause it's even more fun to go head-to-head!!
Birthdays in Denmark seem so family oriented which is absolutely fabulous and the way it should be!!!
