Valgfrihed ... Freedom to choose

...A conversation between Kelli and one of her colleagues--

Kelli:
Do we have a common curriculum that all the English teachers use?

Kollega:
We have a theme for each semester, and we choose student literature that has connections to that theme.

Kelli:
Ok, are there any literature selections that they MUST read?

Sin kollega:
Nej.
No, it is your choice. However, we do have books and short stories available for you to use. You choose items from that bank or you can use items that you choose yourself.

Kelli:
Ok, who approves any new literature that I might want to use?

Sin kollega virker til at være forvirret..... Hun spørger: Godkender?
Her colleague seems to be confused.... She asks: Approves?

Kelli:

Yes, in Texas, EVERY BOOK must be approved by the school´s principal as well as other "high level" school district people. And sometimes, although a book has been approved, parents of students can still protest the book....and if they fight hard enough, the book might actually be removed.

Kollega, griner/smiling:

As a gymnasium teacher in Denmark you have freedom to choose literature for your classes that you think is appropriate. When you are hired as a gymnasium employee, we are saying that we trust you as a professional to make the best decisions for your students. Companies in Denmark have the same philosophy of "Freedom with Responsibility".... you will get used to it!

Kelli, i sin hoved, til sig selv/ in her head, to herself:
WAUW!

I wonder if she knows how incredible those words are to hear! It has been a long time since I worked in a system of trust and freedom. WOW!

Wow. That is just incredible. What joy it brings to me to know there are places like this on the planet.

Gosh - how strange that not to have that freedom. We have the same saying here in Sweden... guess it's easy to take it for granted.

Thanks for the reminder. And I LOVE your choice of books!

I'm with Paula... it would be great to be in your class! :-) I hope you enjoy your new position. Your students are so lucky.

Perhaps people in Denmark read entire books for the entire message and don't pull things out of context to sound inflammatory.

I do wish there were more responsibility for oneself in the US. People wouldn't be so alarmist, and there wouldn't be so many inane rules/laws.

Thankyou for putting Kurt in there :)

I was pen pals with him for a short while when I was a teenager, he was a remarkable man.

OMG, is this REAL? After living through Texas public schools for decades, the statement "when we hire you we are saying we trust you to make decisions for the students you teach" sounds about as real as something out of Willy Wonka.

I can't wait to hear more about this teaching job.... and what you're able to do with it. Amazing!
