Mads and I used our trips back and forth to each other last year to move my things to Denmark--I did not use a shipping company and I did not sent anything by post. Eveything I brought to Denmark came in our suitcases each month. 2 suitcases per person, 50 pounds each. So, in September 2007, I made a "plan"....which things to send on each trip. Of course, I didn´t bring furniture--only person things, clothes, shoes (LOL), my laptop, photo albums, my Meme´s quilt and my great grandmother´s quilt and my books.... I had a plan so that on each trip, more books came to Denmark!
Bøger er meget vigtig til mig-- jeg tror at et hjem skulle være fyld med "print"--fra poesi og romaner til biografier og dagbøger og alting i mellem! Jeg elsker at læse og jeg elsker at sidde i et værelse og ser bøger omkring mig. Dog, i februar, indset jeg at jeg kunne ikke tage alle af mine bøger til Danmark. De var så tung og jeg kun havde 23 kilos per kufferter, så jeg begyndte at bestemme hvilke bøger at bringe og hvilke bøger at sælge. Det var SÅ SVÆRT at bestemme!
Books are very important to me---I believe that a home should be filled with "print"---from poetry and novels to biographies and journals and everything in between! I love to read and I love to sit in a room and see books around me. However, in February, I realized that I could not take all of my books to Denmark. They were so heavy and I could only have 50 pounds per suitcase, so I began to decide which books to bring and which books to sell. It was SO DIFFICULT to decide!

-Bøger hvilke har en speciel forbindelse til mig--såsom Tirsdags med Morrie, Einstein (fra Ønkle Pat!), Rosa Parks biografi, Lærer Mand, Den Farve Lilla, og Vand er bred.
-Bøger hvilke jeg har samlet ovre årene--min første edition af Dræbe ikke en sang fugl (min mest yndlingbog i verden!), Eventyr af Tom Sawyer, og Huckleberry Finn
I alt, bragte jeg ca. 75 bøger og solgte mere en 300.

-Books by my favorite authors--Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult, Anita Shreve and Richard Paul Evans;
-Books which have a special connection to me---such as Tuesdays with Morrie, Einstein (from Uncle Pat), Rosa Parks´ biography, Teacher Man, The Color Purple and The Water is Wide;
-Books which I have collected over the years--my first editions of To Kill a Mockingbird (my MOST favorite book in the world), Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn.
In all, I brought about 75 books and sold more than 300.
Vores reol er ikke fyld... ikke endnu! Men i torsdags, kom mere bøger kom ind til vores hjem, tak til min danske ven, Jesper! Jeg mødte Jesper igennem min blog og vi har snakket på Facebook og email den sidste få måneder. Vi har mange ting til fælles især vores kærlighed af bøger og litteratur. I torsdags havde jeg muligheden for at møde Jesper i person fordi han flytter TIL USA i sidste december og han har så mange bøger at han kan ikke bringe med ham! Så hvis nogen forstår hvor jeg følte, da jeg forlod mine bøger i Amerika, er den Jesper! Nå, efter et dejligt besøg med ham, kørte jeg hjem med MANGE bøger for vores reol! Bøger på dansk og på engelsk. Kigge på billeder af bøgerne at jeg modtog fra Jesper...især det sidste billede! Jeg er så spændt at begynder at læse mine nye dansk romaner!!!
Our bookshelf is not full....yet! But on Thursday, more books came into our home, thanks to my friend, Jesper! I met Jesper through my blog and we have talked on Facebook and email the last few months. We have many things in common, especially our love of books and literature. On Thursday I had the opportunity to meet Jesper in person because he is moving TO THE US at the end of the month and he has so many books that he cannot bring with him! So if anyone understands how I felt when I left all those books in America, it is Jesper! So after a wonderful visit with him, I drove home with MANY books for our bookshelf! Books in Danish and in English. Look at the pictures of the books I received from Jesper....especially the last one! I am so excited to start reading my new Danish novels!!

I use to love to read BK (Before Kids)but found myself with little patience for reading after kids, but I'm hoping to get back to it again someday. I've read Tuesdays with Morrie and loved that book. But otherwise it's been magazines and magazines. I usually order through amazon.uk when ordering English books. You don't pay customs on books coming into Norway, so it's one of the few things I can order online without having to pay the huge Norwegian tax on to get it into the country. Not sure how Denmark is on that but it might be an idea on how you can begin to build up your book collection again my dear...
Same here. I was devastated because I had to leave a lot of my books home. There's no way I could bring them to DK because my books are A LOT. I have my own library at my parents' house and I definitely can't move the library here. There'll be no place!
Since the UK is part of the EU, the Danes do not pay VAT on books from there, but I've found amazon.co.uk to be more expensive than amazon.com, so it can still pay to order from the US.
Of course now the British pound is down compared to the Danish krone, so I'm going to do some serious book-shopping from the UK site. :)
Oh - how heart-breaking to have to leave your books behind. But how generous of Jesper to give you some.. Shakespeare - heaven! The Road - I really want to read that! Paul Auster.. mmm.. and The Corrections - that was a riot to read. Highly recommended!
And first editions - I'm jealous!
Okay...so Kelli, here I must realize a difference between us. I hate books. No, not reading them...I love to read and use them, but as someone who has moved about 5 times in the last three years, I learned to HATE them. I've realized I live in a world where most books are easily accessible (thank God!) and after I read one, I pass it on to someone else to get it out of my house. The only books I keep are ones that I use for reference - my French, German, Art, and literature books. I sent about 30 cookbooks to the Allen Community Outreach when I moved from the apartment to my folks house. I realized that most of them I had not even used.
But yeah, I just hate them. More stuff I have to move and haul around. I SOOOO want a Kindle!
I hear ya. Books will be the death of me. I have 1500 stuffed in a 400 sq. foot apartment! Many of them are hard to find, too. Replacing them would be a nightmare. As of last year, I started trying to convert what I can to ebook. They don't smell or feel as good and they're harder to browse, but easier on my back when I move.
I've been thinking about your problem of getting English books in Denmark. An ereader might be ideal. I have one of the black & white classic Nooks, which is way easier on eyes than color (almost like reading a book), and I manage my library with the free software program Calibre. Most new books that come out are coming out in an ereader edition, and most of the new ones are cheaper than a hardback. There are even online clubs where you can "loan" each other books. There is one for the Nook, and one for the Kindle. Have you ever considered an ereader? It might be just the ticket for the English-language new books you're lusting after. You can usually even "sample" a few chapters before you buy, somewhat akin to browsing.
