I vowed to become greener this year as we change many things in our daily lives and we are doing well so far. However, there is one thing that was I waiting for the weather to help me with..."cycling to work". I want to ride to work every day, but I am STILL an American and I am just not strong enough out in the Danish weather (yeah, yeah, excuses, excuses!!) But today was the day. Mads had to drive to Viborg for work (an hour north of Herning) and I had to teach an 8:00 class, so I had no choice.... today I ride! And since it was raining and 2 degrees celcius this morning, I learned many things....
1. Jeg ejer ikke vandtæt handsker. / I do not own waterproof gloves.
(Tak gud, lånede jeg Mads´. / Thank god, I borrowed Mads´.)
2. Jeg ejer ikke vandtæt rygsæk. / I do not own a waterproof backpack.
I own a rain hat that is really cute (from J.Crew) but it is not so great to keep the water off my head and face.
I have cute rainboots that are great for a fall rainy day, but not really for a winter rainy day, so I am ready to have my new UGGs rainboots with sheepskin in them that Jess will bring on Thursday!
:o) / My bike path from home to the Herning Gymnasium runs downhill. :o)
Which means that my bike path from Herning Gymnasium to home runs uphill!!
Even though the rain was COLD, I sweated because I had too many clothes on!
8. Eyeliner plus dansk regn plus cykler på arbejde = "Besked til selv: Have ikke eyeliner næste gang undtagen jeg vil gerne have Indian krigsmaleng på mit ansigt!"
Eyeliner plus Danish rain plus cycling to work = Note to self: Do not wear eyeliner next time! Unless I wish to have Indian war paint on my face!"
My bike seat was wet when I rode home... I need a plastic cover to set on it next time so my butt stays dry!
I survived!! And although Mads does not need the car tomorrown, I think I will ride AGAIN!

So where is our picture of a soggy Kelli?
Hills in Herning??
You are inspiring! I have wanted to get my bike out, because everyone else is, but I've been too chicken! It's still cold and snowy here in Colorado! Good luck tomorrow! Love ME
I am so proud of you! I think riding again tomorrow is a great idea.
Good for you!!
Oh, Kelli, you are such a good person! We really admire your work ethics because we just couldn't do all of that! Congratulations.
You are VIKING!
That ride sounds rough -- but good for you for toughing it out and going for it again -- biking viking!
That is awesome Kelli- I am planning to bike also when the weather allows it- right now there is still so much snow- it would be easier to sled to work. And I have the same problem as you- downhill to work, uphill home- but I figure I have more time going home then I do going to work- so it will work out. Keep it up I'm proud of ya!!!
Can't believe you didn't take a photo of you after you got to work all wet and with indian-war-paint like makeup running down your face!! That would have been a good laugh!!!! ;-))
no, there are not "hills" in Herning, but there are definite SLOPES to the roads. We live at the "top" and school is at the "bottom" of the slope and for an inexperienced rider, I think calling it uphill and downhill is totally appropriate!
As for the pic.... maybe next time.... when I am cuter! :o)
LOL! Good for you Kelli! Enjoy the cycling!
Way to go, Kelli...ahhh, out little girl is growing up - lol...you are becoming becoming a true dane ;-)
No, seriously, if there was one thing I HATED doing in DK, it was riding my bike in rainy weather...be proud of yourself!
I have so much guilt now about my bike hanging in the garage where I can no way get it down. I suppose I will just have to find a way to cope with all that guilt. Ice cream maybe?
I tried biking twice or three times in Copenhagen and I gave up. Bikers are quite vicious in here. They will just push you aside or ring their bells until you go deaf if you don't pull over or bike faster. Urgh. Maybe I'll try again in the future after I've overcame my trauma LOL
picture next time when you are cuter??? hahahaha.....you funny girl......hahahahaha...
You go girl! My job is WAY too far from home... serisouly...I mean it... like 26 kl... so you will have to ride for both of us! : )
OMG, reading this totally stressed me out.
I think you should create some initiative for yourself to bike...like, maybe Mads could make you a punch card...and each time you ride your bike to work, you get a punch and when you get 10 punches, he has to take you out for a night on the town.
Nettie... I love the idea! But instead of a night out.... a NEW PAIR OF BOOTS! (notice, I do not say shoes any longer.... I am living in the boot world!)
Great job, Kelli! I'll be biking to work soon as well.... I can't wait for the time change and we get some more daylight. Biking to work is awesome whether you're in DK or DC lol
Too funny! Good for you. Chuck bikes the 6km to/from work each day. The car just hangs out in the carpark all day. His ride is also "downhill" on the way there and "uphill" on the way back...good not to get all sweaty and stinky on the way to work! He has rain pants to stay dry when the sun decides to hide and I can't say he has the eyeliner problem! See you soon.
