I enrolled in the PhD program at UNT when I planned to work as a public school principal for the rest of my career. 6 years, 78 university credits, mega student loans and lots of working hours (and a move to Denmark) later , everything comes down to 2 days....yesterday and today.
Den PhD program i Texas har 3 dele--
1. Du tager alle klasser i din hoved emne (min er Curriculum & Instruction), plus alle klasser i din anden emne (min er teknologi), plus alle undersøgelse klasse (ca. i alt 78 kreditter)
The PhD program in Texas has 3 parts--
1. You take all of your courses in your major subject (mine is Curriculum & Instruction), plus all the classes in your minor subject (mine is technology), plus all your research classes (about 78 credits in all)
2. After all the coursework is completed, you take your Comprehensive Exams which are written exams from each of your major and minor classes. You must receive a grade of A or B on each exam to pass because a C is the same as a failing grade.
3. If you pass all your comprehensive exams, you are ready to conduct your research and write your disseration. If you do not pass all of the exams, you are done. No more. Done.
I have heard that so many people finish #1 but they never do #3.... in fact, the research shows that about 50% never do #3. And now I understand why.
--All but dissertation.
I am on #2 now--yesterday and today. I took 4 exams yesterday and I will take my other four today. Then after 3pm today, everything is out of my hands. I will find out in the next few weeks about my grades and if I pass all 8, I will begin my research. Otherwise I am finished with my PhD education and then it is time to start paying back all my student loans. Now I completely understand why 50% of PhD candidates end up "A.B.D"--all but disseration. My head hurts...but it´s time for the other 4 exams.
Skal jeg nogensinden blive DR. NØRGAARD?!
Kun tid vil fortælle....
Will I ever become DR. NØRGAARD?!
Only time will tell...

You can do it!!
Tell Mads that a giant chocolate påske egg would certainly help in the process.
Oh my gosh, you're trying to become a doctor????? I was nervous enough having a high school principle come visit me..will I be smart enough to make conversation??? But now- A DOCTOR???? You might be too smart to come visit me....
OK OK....you probably are but who cares...still will be fun and I was just joking around...I'm proud of you for trying to be all you can be and I'm sure you'll do fine. I never knew it was such a complicated process. Just figured you went a few extra years and had to write- what you said (can't recall the word)- never knew it was so complicated!! But you're a smart girl, look at how quickly you've taken up that weird language!!!! hahahaha!! (No offense Mads!!) Seriously now, I'm off to the barnehage..have a super great day!!!!
I know you will make it. What an exciting journey :)
You can do it!
Of course you can do it Kelli :)
There is no point doubting it because you can and will become Dr Nørgaard.
(This is my pep talk! Excuse the slightly chiding tones!!!)
Hold on a sec, I have to hit the back of my head to make my eyes uncross after reading everything you have to do to get your PhD.
I am embarressed to say I still have to read the box when I make kraft macaroni and cheese. But like Townie said in WaterBoy...." "You can DOO ITTTT! "
Lord, I remember those days before the exam. I threw up every morning for a month. I lived on Maalox, Saltines and tea (coffee being too strong for my stomach). And two days after I passed they asked me for an abstract on what I was going to do my dissertation on. *Splutter* But I found it on my computer a while back and it is the funniest thing I've ever read. That's not the dissertation I'm writing!
You can do it! You'll pass and join me in the grey world of ABD! Whoot!!
Keep up the great work, Kelli! You have lots of ppl all over the world cheering for you :-)
Wow - that's a lot of hard work!
Good luck!
I got to that point, too, and thought ABD would be fine. Then I thought again about how much I wanted that Ed.D. in C&I. I did it and you can do it, girl. And if you don't do well on those exams, you're not done. The school wants you to graduate. They really do! Come on, Dr. Kelli. Keep the faith :)
I have always admired you for your determination when it came to education! You WILL pass and I will be proud to call my soster, Dr. Norgaard! love you! You can do it!
You've just made every whiney comment I've ever made about getting my bachelor's obsolete. WOW. Girlfriend, if you've gone this far, there's no poing in looking back. I'm sending all my good-luck vibes in your direction...trust me! Get those grades, and get cracka-lackin on that dissertation! YOU CAN DO IT!
I feel a bit silly writing this, as it obviously has nothing to do with luck and everything to do with hard work and intelligence, but: GOOD LUCK!
Hope your day went well - I'm sure you aced the comp exams. You are brilliant and they are lucky to have someone like you in their program. We are so proud of you - no matter the outcome of this test.
It will be nice to be Dr. Norgaard - will help in income to pay back all the student loans.
to answer your question:
yes. you will. :)
When I first arrived in the US as a postdoc I was amazed (and impressed) at the amount of work american graduate students had to get through just to be allowed to start doing "proper" research. They, of course, were amazed to meet a 25 year old with a PhD, but they might have been less impressed if they'd realised how relatively ignorant I was compared to them.
I won't wish you good luck, because it rarely comes down to luck. Instead I hope you get what you deserve, and I hope that what you deserve is a stunning set of A's.
