Sluk Danmark ... Close down Denmark

Happy Easter!
In America everything shuts down on Easter Sunday (even WALMART!) and SOMETIMES people have a holiday the Friday before Easter. I am certain that all my friends and family will be a little jealous when they hear about the Easter holidays in Denmark!

I was not surprised to learn that the schools are closed the entire week before Easter and the Monday after....but LISTEN TO THIS: All of the shops (including the grocery stores), companies and offices are closed from THURSDAY through MONDAY! The grocery stories will open for a few hours on Saturday, but apart from these few hours, EVERYTHING is closed for 5 days... When we planned our trip to London, I just assumed that Mads was using vacation days but now I know, he had the days off anyway! So I will say it again... HAPPY EASTER!

Several international flavored Danes we know jet off as a rule during the Easter holidays in DK. It's like a morgue!

I would give anything to be somewhere where there was life on the streets today.

I always try to be prepared for it, not the fact that the shops are shut so much, but the eerie 'invaders of the bodysnatchers' air that is all pervasive, but I am always caught short.

Same thing here, although I read in the newspaper the other day there is a giant gardening frachsise which will be open throughout the holiday- even on Easter Sunday!!!!!! I couldn't believe that!!! Thought it was a law or something here that everything had to close...
Enjoy London, hope things stay open there so you can do some shopping and go to STARBUCKS (Lucky girl!!!)

Actually it's not true that only grocery stores are open a few hours Saturday.
All shops have regular Saturday opening hours on Saturday in the Easter.
But Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are all holy days so all regular shops and grocery stores are required to keep closed on these days.
Only shops like gas stations and small kiosk like 7-11 etc. are open on the holy days.

But banks are closed every Saturday and Sunday, so Mads would never have to meet at work on Saturday in the Easter since he works in a bank.

The Wednesday before Easter is always the biggest shopping day of the year in Denmark. Even bigger than the last shopping day before Christmas.

I was a little unprepared for it all, too. We went shopping yesterday for some remaining foodstuffs to get us through the rest of the week, and the grocery store was PACKED.

Wow! That is great! We didn't even get Good Friday off this year because it was a make up day for a snow day we had to take earlier in the year...

That is so lovely. Retail workers deserve a vacation just like everyone else!
