Everywhere in Denmark right now we have yellow fields. I first noticed them in April as I drove back and forth from town to town for English lessons. The more I drove, the more I saw. I wish that you could see the fields with your own eyes because I have never seen anything like this.

Imagine--you are driving along the road and see the windmills and the cows and the green fields and suddenly, EVERYTHING TURNS YELLOW. It is so beautiful!
Efter mange kørertur omkring Jylland, bestemte jeg mig for at spørge en mand som jeg har undervist fordi han har en uddannelse som landmand og jeg vidste at han kan lære mig om Danmarks gule marker.
After many driving trips throughout Jutland, I decided to ask a man that I have been teaching because he has an education as a farmer and I knew that he could teach me about Denmark´s yellow fields.
Han lærte mig om vores gule marker og jeg lærte at VI GROER MADLAVNINGSOLIE i Danmark! Og jeg er sikker på at mennesker andre steder i verden "groer olie" men jeg har aldrig tænkt om dette før.... før at jeg så vores gule marker. Markerne vil gro andre ting senere på året...måske majs eller byg...men om foråret, GRO DE RAPSOLIE! Så vi gro olie og det skaber en flot udsigt for alle som kører på de danske veje! He taught me about our yellow fields and I learned that WE GROW COOKING OIL in Denmark! I am sure that people in other places in the world "grow oil" but I have never thought about it before.... before I saw our yellow fields. The fields will grow other things later in the year...maybe corn or barley....but in spring, THEY GROW RAPS OIL (the closest thing to Rapsolie in America is Canola oil.) So we grow oil and it creates a beautiful landscape for for everyone who drives on the roads in Denmark!

I love the yellow fields - it's crazy when the sun is out as you actually need sunglasses or they'll blind you!
Yeah we have fields of that also here- it's gorgeous!! I use raps oil all the time if I don't use Olive oil..

The rape flowers also smell really nice, a poor man's jasmine! Sometimes my spouse comes home with armfuls of it from the road side to stink the house up real good.
Denmark must look very distinctive from the air with all the fields of vivid yellow!
I noticed those when we were in Denmark in March. The UK grows a lot of rapeseed too.
We grow rape seed oil in England too. I love the rippling yellow fields.

The yellow fields has a special place in my heart...I love and miss them! The Danish poet Frank Jæger wrote this beautiful sentence:
Dit blik fik gule marker med sig hjem.
Nu ejer du en længsel efter dem.
Taking the bus one day from Ebeltoft to Århus, we came over the hill from Femmøller and I was struck blind. Lord knows how the bus driver didn't manage to drive off the road because everything was shockingly neon yellow. It is one of the more impressive sights of Denmark. (Which sounds bad, but the yellow rapsoil fields are REALLY impressive!)

Yes, they are beautiful. Great to read the post today. We were just talking about the yellow fields the other day and I did the famous mental note to blog about it...but trust me, your info is much better than my draft post :)
Kelli - I just double tagged you! Canola was originally called rapeseed, but I guess the name just turned people off! Love the colors too!
There's a surprisingly interesting wikipedia article on canola. Apparently most North American rapeseed is grown in Canada (where it originally comes from - hence the "ca" in "canola") and North Dakota, so it's not entirely surprising that a Texan has never come across it before moving to a colder climate.
Those fields are very beautiful, but they are horrible on my allergies!
