As a lifelong educator, I have looked for one thing since I moved to Denmark. But I have not found it yet because it does not exist!!!
Vi har ikke offentlig skolebuser i Danmark! Børn enten går til skole ellers cykler til skole. Hvis de bor for langt fra skolen, tager de busen......bybusen.......
We do not have public school buses in Denmark! Children either walk to school or cycle to school. If they live too far from the school, they take the bus.....the city bus.....
Mange bybuser har "skoleruter" om morgen og om eftermiddagen men det er ikke gratis til skolebørn. (Det er afhængig af hvor du bor og hvor gammel du er. Se nederest.) Da jeg fortalte Mads hvor meget penge vores skolesystem betalte hvert år for dens skolebuser og de medarbejder i den "transportation afdeling", kunne han ikke tro det!!! Så hvis dit amerikanske barn klager om hans GRATIS skolebus, fortæller ham at påvirker dem! (Især i min gammel skole hvor de fleste buser har airconditioning!)Many city buses have school routes each morning and each afternoon but they are not free to school children (It is dependent on where you live and how old you are. See below.) When I told Mads how much money our school system spent each year on its school buses and employees in the school transportation department, he could hardly belive it! So if your American child complains about his FREE school bus, tell him to appreciate it! (Especially in my old school district where most of the buses were air-conditioned!)

The Kommune (Municipality) has the responsibility to provide transportation for children if they are:
§ in preschool-3rd grade and live more than 2.5 km from the school.
§ in 4th - 6th grade and live more than 5 km. from the school.
§ in 7th -9th grade and live more than 6 km from the school.
§ in 10th grade and live more than 9 km from the school. (and remember, you cannot drive in DK until you are 18!)
§ Gymnasium students (grades 11-13) do not receive any free transportation.
AND the bus picks up at the public bus stop...not from their houses and streets!
Det er interresant at flytte til et nyt land fordi tingerne at vi anser som "normal rutine" er ikke den sammen fra land til land. I Texas ansede jeg "den gule bus" som en normal del af skole og forventer det at stoppe tæt på mit hus og hente mit barn.....for gratis siden jeg betaler skat. En ting mere som hverken er "rigtig eller forkert" men blot forskellig.
It is interesting to move to a new country because the things that we regard as "normal routine" are not the same from place to place. In Texas I regarded the "yellow bus" as a normal part of school and expect it to stop and pick up my child very near to my house....for free since I pay taxes. One more thing that is not "right or wrong" but just different.

Good observation. It is true, noone here expects free school buses, but we expect the school should be free instead. No right or wrong, just different :-) .

Too bad DK doesn't have short buses.
The joy of living abroad is discovering new angles and truths...
I often laugh whenever there is a news story here on the news about parents getting upset that their children have to -- GASP! -- walk a half-mile to school.
Because of budget crisis and all, many school systems around the area have scaled back on bus service, especially for those children who live a mile or less from school. Parents are up in arms about that.
I figure, walking is good for the kids. And it really doesn't make sense to bus the kids a mile down the road as long as they don't have to cross busy highways.
Kelli, school buses may not be as common in DK as they are in the States but they do exist, mainly for children in outlying rural areas who're not always well-served by commercial buses.
Here in Århus we also have extra buses for the ethnic-minority kids from Brabrand who are bussed out around town. I guess that that kind of bussing is an idea the Danes got from the USA.
However what Denmark doesn't have, so far as I am aware, is specially-marked school buses. The school buses are just ordinary single-decker coaches.

California has not had free school busses for well over a decade. If you are low income they do bus free of charge. Otherwise you have to pay a huge amount to have your child ride the school bus. So, most parents drive their kids to and from school which make it crazy at drop off and pick up times, let alone all the pollution that has been added because of this.
