the last blog about Texas....for now! :o)
On this trip to Texas, my 2nd priority (graduation was first, of course!) was to introduce Mads to the rest of my family! He knows, of course, my parents and my sister´s family, but he had never met the group "down south". I was born in Nederland, Texas, but my family are Cajun people who moved to Nederland many years ago from a little town in Louisiana called Mamou. You can learn more about Cajuns HERE! Our family name is FONTENOT which in Cajun country is the Amerian equivalent to SMITH or the Danish equivalent to LARSEN!
Nederland was settled by the Dutch and got its name from their home land. We have one windmill in Nederland to remind us of the first residents! Maybe it is "serendipity" that I ended up in Denmark, land of windmills and why I think they are so amazing!
Nederland is known for many things...especially good Cajun people and Cajun cooking! It is also know for hurricanes since Nederland sits right at the edge of Texas at the Gulf of Mexico.
But more than Cajun food and hurricanes, Nederland is known for one particular type of business....Oil refineries. Mads has never seen a refinery before so he was pretty excited to drive through the area, taking pictures.
They are actually quite pretty at sunset....as long as you keep your car windows CLOSED so you cannot smell them!
I am so glad that Mads had the opportunity to visit Nederland, all the Fontenots, and my special friends there. I think it is so important that the person who means the most to you knows "where you come from" because it gives him/her a little glimpse into the things that made you who you are today. We had a wonderful time in Nederland and I loved being there.....to eat my uncle´s delicious shrimp and crab gumbo, to meet my two new cousins who were born this last year and to see my Viking and my Cajun family connect to each other... and I am quite certain that MoMo sat up in heave, watching it all with a smile on her face!

Mine to nye kusiner.... Eisley og Karsyn!
My two new cousins...Eisley and Karsyn!
My uncle made gumbo even though it was hot outside....just for me! Ok, ok, I admit... it was for everyone!

You look absolutely radiant on your photo. Its heartening to see that.
I just love that picture of you with the baby and then the baby in the potty!
Great to hear that Mads finally met up with your roots - as it were...
Great to read about your family Kelli. I don't know what Cajun is before I met you / read your blog :)
It seems like you had a WONDERFUL time back in Texas. I'm glad Mads finally got to meet more of your family. You look so great in the pic holding your cousin. You look just so happy in the moment. :)
Sorry our paths didn't cross while you were here, but I am so happy you had such an awesome trip!
Looks just like the kind of place we need to visit someday. I LOVE cajun cooking...some friends of ours are from Louisiana and she is 100% Cajun. She makes the best shrimp etufe (sp??) and jambalaya.
Oh you were so Close to me... I'm very near by in Louisiana. Mamou is even closer!
