Opdagelser i Texas... Discoveries in Texas

Mads had a Jeff Foxworthy Redneck calendar last year and he loved to look at it every day to find out "how to tell if you are a REDNECK". As a non-Redneck Texas, I hated that calendar because in the back of my mind, I knew that many things on it were true! And our trip through Texas last week proved that Rednecks are alive and well in my home state!

We drove many miles in only four days and saw many things, but the best part was watching Mads get excited about the things that I have seen so many times before. He took pictures along the Texas highways the same way that I take them in Denmark. We drove from Allen (in north Dallas) to Stephenville (for graduation) to Nederland (the town where I was born) to College Station (the town where Jess is going to college) back to Allen....4 days....1050 miles....1689 kilometers.

When you look at the map, you can see that we only drove in the middle of Texas so let me explain the size of Texas as compared with Denmark. Texas is 268,820 square miles (696,200 km2) and Denmark is 16640 square miles (43098 km2) so in our 4 days, it is the same as if we drove across Denmark 4 1/2 times!

Nu.... Mads´ Redneck Opdagelser i Texas....
And now....Mads´ Redneck Discoveries in Texas....

Du er måske en redneck hvis du.....
You might be a redneck if.....

...du bor i "CUT & SHOOT , TEXAS"!
....you live CUT & SHOOT, TEXAS! And yes, this is actually a town in SE Texas!

.....you sell ammo from the bag of your pickup on a Sunday afternoon!
.....or worse... if you sell GUNS from the back of your pickup on a Sunday afternoon!

.....one half of your house is delivered on Saturday and the other half comes 2 days later!

Mads discovered many other things as we drove south and now he can understand why we say "Everything is bigger in Texas"!

Motor homes in Denmark are small with a bike behind them.....
...Vores statuer er større....
...Our statues are bigger....

...vores fængsler er større.... (og vi har MANGE!)
...our prisons are bigger....(and we have MANY!!)

...and our trucks are bigger so we can have our dogs in the back of them...Mads was so shocked when he saw this!
En speciel ting om Texas.... Alle laver dig føler "velkommen"!
One special thing about Texas...Everyone makes you feel welcomed!
I tell things about Texas that I am embarrassed about... I tell things about Texas that make me angry... and I tell things about Texas that make everyone laugh because they cannot believe they are true! But no matter what, when someone asks me where I am from... I always say "TEXAS" before I say America because I am proud to be a Texan!!

Wow...what a lot of great photos you captured along the highway!

But one tip...I'd be very careful of taking a picture of any man selling guns out of the back of his pick-up! LOL

Oh...and I get SO MAD when I see people with their dogs in the back of their pick-ups like that! I actually saw a dog jump out of one once going down Plano Pkwy! Fortunately, myself and the other cars were watching and did not hit the dog and the dog managed to hobble to the side of the road...but I was livid!

Loved the pictures. It reminds me of the time I was driving from Las Vegas to Yosemite. We crossed so many 'brothels'. At Death Valley there were little kiosks selling beef jerky. I went into one and he also had some small pistols for sale.
On my next visit to the states I hope to visit Austin and see for myself if everything really is bigger in texas :)

What an interesting post. I've never visited TX, but there was a time when we wanted to check out Austin. What do you think of Austin? I hear it's different than other cities in TX, mentality-wise.

OMG. You guys move houses like that? LOL Never saw that thing before. I have a friend who is currently living in Houston and she keeps amusing me with her stories

Great post for comparing DK to TX through Mads' eyes... I liked the smaller motor home pulling a bike in DK! And I must admit some photos you are either sneaky or just brave to take. :-)

Cut & Shoot, made me wonder if there is a list of crazy city names for the US? or worldwide...
