We drive to Germany (like most Danes) about every three months to buy beer and soda for a super cheap price. We save SO much money, but there is another "cost" to our cheap beer.....
Når du køber øl og soda "forbi grænsen", skal du underskrive dette papir som siger at du kan ikke bringe dåser tilbage til købmand for penge. Som betyder--du kan ikke genbruge... Det ved jeg.... ikke så godt...
When you buy beer and soda "across the border", you must sign this paper which says that you cannot return the cans to the grocery store for money. In other words--you cannot recycle.... I know, I know...not so good....

Don't you have a regular recycling center where you can drop things off...without getting $ for glass and cans? We also have these domed containers scattered throughout the kommune for papir, glass and cans. I just made my Flensburg run today :)
You can still deliver them at the recycle stations, though, and many bottle automats will accept them and send them for recycling, although you won't get money for it. :)
DUH!!! Not sure if this was a blonde or pregnant moment!!! I am so glad I posted this because I never thought of taking them to the recycle center myself... we are just so used to dragging them to the grocery store! Thanks May! Now I will make a separate recycle box for our cheap beer and Faxe Kondi!
You don't need to bring them to the recycle center, you can just put them in the bottle automat at your grocery store, then tey will be squashed, melted and recycled like any Danish can, only difference is you wont get any refund as you ewer paid for in the first place.
The way the bottle automat recognizes if you should get a refund is by reading the barcode. This way it can tell if it's a can bought in Denmark or Germany.
This is also the reason you can't squash the cans before returning then as the automat would have no way of teling if you are entitled for the refund or not.
When you return bottles bought in Denmark you have to make sure the barcode sticker is still on the bottle otherwise the automat wont give you a refund for the bottle. You will have to contact an employee to get a refund for a bottle where the atomat can't read the barcode.
OR you could take them back to Germany every time you go there!
Shame to do without the return money though, as it is a real perk.
We went to Flensberg, But just visited the shops on the walking street and had dinner...I wish now we had gone to the suppermarket to see what they looked like!
Happiness is! Sounds like you now can have your cake..um, BEER and recycle it too!! Yay! (Couldn't resist that little fiddlin' with the cliche!) Have a great week! Enjoying the blog, even if I don't comment all that often!
Can't you recycle the cans in a normal recycling centre? Should be possible!
I've seen Norwegians with loads of cans and bottles at the Swedish shopping centers...it seems they hold on to their Swedish recycling and bring it back over the border to turn in for pant. I just drop it off at our little store at the recycling bins outside!
