Do you know what Petanque is? I had never heard of it before I moved to Denmark and saw the sign for "Herning's Petanque Club"! I saw so many people playing petanque each day as I came home from work, but I never quite understood it! That is, until I went to my first (but not my last!) Petanque tournament!
Mads og hans far spillede sidste weekend i Linds byfest og så Taimi (min svigermor) og jeg stå og så dem spiller, lærte jeg mere og mere! De fleste holde var 2 mænd men få havde en mand og hans kone, så måske Mads og jeg kan være et hold i fremtiden?!! (Fordi Petanque har en "atletisk niveau" som jeg kan lide! LOL)
Mads and his dad played last weekend in Lind's town festival and as Taimi (my mom in law) and I stood and watched them play, I learned more and more! Most of the teams were 2 men, but a few were a man and his wife, so I thought that maybe Mads and I could be a team in the future?!! (because Petanque has an "physical exertion level" that I like! LOL)

Hvert mennesker havde hans egen personlige Petanque bolde så før jeg kan spiller, skal jeg finde ud hvor du køber Petanque bolde! I Texas, har vi et spil som hedder "Washers" som er det nærmeste "sydlig" spil til Petanque og jeg var OK til "washers" så det håber jeg at Mads vil gerne have mig på hans hold! :o) Ellers Taimi og jeg kan blive et hold og udfordrer drengene!Each person had his own personal set of Petanque balls, so before I can play, I better find out where you buy Petanque balls! In Texas we have a game called "Washers" which is the closest southern game I can think of that is like Petanque. I was OK as a "washers" player so I hope that means that Mads will want me on his team! :o) Or else Taimi and I can make a team and challenge the boys!

Interesting! We played "Bags" in Chicago this summer. It's also known as "Cornhole." (Bags if you use beanbags, Cornhole if you use corn-filled bags.) The Bags boards looked the same as your "Washers" boards ... I'm guessing these games are all cousins.
Fortunately, Bags was not nearly as serious as Petanque sounds. I don't do well with intense competition ;-)

Petanque is a bit like boule, I think... A very relaxing game. OK - apart from the heated arguments over balls and centimetres! ;-)
Kelli: we were talking about this just yesterday and wondering what it is called. What a coincidence that you played it. Jenni, Bad Immigrant, Eva- Its called pentaque! Now we know. They play it near Pixie and boba all the time.
Yes, it looks like boules. Mark defined this to me as a game you can still play at 60 after three Ricards. Then he taught us on holiday (but I'm not 60 and had only had two Ricards).
Wow, I never heard of this one before. Sounds like lawn bowling, I guess. It seems like a great way to enjoy the nice weather outside!
This looks like the game of Bocchi Ball that we play at Heritage Ranch.
Petanque, boules, same same! Never had the patience for this game! June, at the spot you mentioned, you'll likely see Mikael and me having a game of badminton while the kids are playing at the playground! Right on top of the boules "court".
Kelli, is your MIL of Finnish extraction?? Her name has a real Finnish ring to it...
Jennie...you are very observant! Yes, she is Finnish...she was adopted by a Danish family during the Finnish-Russian war when she was a small girl... so Mads is half Danish, Half Finnish!
Wow. We call those children "Finnebørn". There are many books written about them, and that time in history. It was a very sad situation, and it has left deep scars on Finland that last to this day. Also on the children dotted around Scandinvia now. There's quite a good Swedish movie about it, "Mother of Mine". Bawled my eyes out. Enough Finnish history for today! (you know I have a bachelor in Finnish, right?)
This is super popular in Spain too! We used to watch the older men play every day near our apartment in Barcelona. My husband and his friends like to play it here in the summer now!
