Albert and Emmitt found a new friend tonight. They both went outside about ten minutes ago and discovered something on our terrace.....
I have learned that it is very normal to see hedgehogs out in the wild in Denmark! They are everywhere! I have only seen them as a pet in America and when I told Mads that, he was quite shocked! Now we have a dog who is standing at the backdoor, scratching and begging to go out and play with his new friend!

Hon, I think you mean "now we have a *dog* who is standing at the backdoor" but I know how you feel about Albert so...
:-D
BTW, I hear hedgehogs like saucers of milk.
Stakkars pinsvin! I could just imagine, you're running out to get some yummy nibblies for the wife-hedgehog, you turn forget to turn left at Albuquerque, and some dog sticks his nose in your face!
I love hedgehogs! They're so cute and...prickly....
We have a lot here as well. I've counted three so far, but there are probably more.
They're snacking on the outdoor cats' food, so I'm giving extra rations. :)
"Now we have a god who is standing at the backdoor" - you mean dog right?
Our yard used to be FULL of them - at least one per night during their season but I guess Zoe's barking proved too much for them as we don't see them much anymore :(
If you want to give it something to drink, only give it water.
In the old days most Danes were thaught to put milk out in the garden if they saw a hedgehog. But this is a very bad idea. Although wild hedgehogs are lactose-intolerant, they will eagerly consume milk and other dairy products. The adult hedgehogs get ill with a bad stomach from drinking milk and the kids die from it!
Now it is instead reccomended to put water out to hedgehogs if you see some in your garden, because they can have a hard time finding water themselves in gardens without natural waterholes.
Wild hedgehogs are a natural form of garden pest control, so having one in your garden can be a good thing.

Is it your dog you refer to as a god? :-) Or maybe it was just a funny typo.
BAD ASS!!!
I would crap my pants in delight if I walked out back and saw something cool like that. Funny, Oprah never mentioned the hedgehogs on her DK episode....
Love you!
although Albert is perfect...he is not a god... guess my dyslexia was kicking in with all the excitement!
And Pete, so glad you said what you did...Mads already gave it a dish of milk (which albert immediately went out there and drank!) I told him that when teachers had them as pets in the US, they gave them cat food...he looked at me like I was nuts!
Everyday is a learning day in DK!
It's right about the milk. To avoid, definitely. As far as I know, kitty dry food is okay for hedgehogs. Perhaps Pete could confirm?
Awww.. so sweet! Lots of hedgehogs in the wild in the UK too...
@ Pete: Thank you so much for the correction!! I would feel horrible if I poisoned a hedgehog!! I will diligently spread the word, as I think all the Danes I know would put out milk!
@ Kelli: I think I'll have to get you "Dog is my co-pilot" as a bumper sticker. My personal favorite t-shirt says "Poor Spellers of the World: Untie" - One of my very smart friends was wearing it and I complemented him on his "Poor Spellers of the World Unite" slogan. He looked down at his shirt, back up at me, and said "Honey, that says 'Untie.'"
Here's what Wikipedia says about feeding hedgedogs in the garden: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog#Diet
In areas that have hedgehogs in the wild, they are often welcomed as a natural form of garden pest control. Many people leave food out to attract hedgehogs. Although hedgehogs are lactose-intolerant, they will eagerly consume cheese, milk, and dairy products, causing illness. The common pet hedgehog (Four-toed Hedgehog) can however have a small portion of cottage cheese as a dietary supplement. Dog and cat food are better than dairy, but both are often too high in fat and too low in protein. It is best to leave out only a small treat, leaving them plenty of appetite for the pests in one's garden.
Hedgehogs are the most adorable creatures! I was surprised to see them all over the place in Denmark.
I'm going to be on the lookout for hedgehogs... not sure they're in the city tho... but maybe Mac & I can make a trip to country side and find one. Thanks for another great post! Pictures are great, too.
