Today Patti and I (and lots of other foreigners in Denmark) took two parts of Prøve 3, the Danish language exam. We have all taken Danish classes for many many months and have completed Module 5 (the last module that you MUST take), so we were READY for Prøve 3, right?!
I dag var skrivning og læsning (mundtlig er på den 9. december) og jeg tog til Lærdansk med en følese af selvsikkerhed...... til jeg åbenede eskamen!
Today we took the reading and writing portions (oral is on December 9), and I must say that I went to Lærdansk this morning with a feeling of confidence....until I opened the test!
Mine tanker om min Prøve 3 oplevelse/
My thoughts on my Prøve 3 experience:
1. Jeg har en stor ordforråd på dansk....men ikke stor nok. Jeg læste mindst 15 ord som jeg har aldrig set før....og de var vigtige ord til enten spørgsmål eller svare! (og kontekst "clues" hjalp ikke!)
1. I have a pretty good-sized vocabulary in Danish...but not big enough. I read at least 15 words that I have never seen before in my life....and they were all pretty important words to either the question or the answers! (and the context clues did not help at all!)
2. Læsning har 3 dele-- skannelæsning, intensivlæsning og nærlæsning. Skannelæsning er meget nem fordi vi fik en 33 sider blad og skulle svare 15 spørgsmål (i 25 minutter) med information vi har skannet i bladet. Du får en point per svar.
2. The reading test has 3 parts--scanning reading, intensive reading, and "close" reading. Scanning reading is pretty easy. We received a 33 page magazine and had to answer 15 questions (in 25 minutes) using information that we have scanned in the magazine. You get one point per answer.
3. Intensivlæsning var UTROLIG SVÆR! Du får 2 historie at læse med 7 spørgsmål. At svare spørgsmål, er det nødvendigt at udlede. Svarene stå ikke i tekst... du skal skabe dem. MEN PAS PÅ at du ikke skrive FOR MEGET eller FOR LIDT! Hvert svar er værd 2 point. Jeg er ikke sikkert hvis jeg fik 4 point i intensivlæsning. Jeg skiftede mine svare så ofte!
3. Intensive reading was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! You get two stories to read with seven questions. In order to answer the questions, you must infer! The answers are not actually in the text...you have to create them on your own. BUT WATCH OUT that you do not write TOO MUCH or TOO LITTLE! Each answer is worth 2 points. I am not sure if I even scored four points on this section....I kept changing my answers!
4. Nærlæsning er en historie med 8 ord som har været taget væk. Du har fire muligheder at vælge fra til hvert svar.... Nærlæsning afprøver din dygtighed på dansk for at genkende ord form og ord som hænger fast sammen (fx: verbum og adjektiver som stå altid med en bestemt præposition) DET ER SVÆRT..... den meste svær del af Prøve 3 efter min mening. Hvert ord er værd 1 point.
4. Close reading is a story with 8 words that have been removed. You have four options to choose from each each answer.... The point of close reading is to test your ability in Danish to recognize word forms and word "couplings" (e.g.: verbs and adjectives that always stand with a certain preposition) IT IS DIFFICULT....the most difficult part of Prøve 3 in my opinion. Each word is worth 1 point.
5. Den skriftlige del har 2 opgaver. I dag fik vi "en email korrespondance" der havde bestemt ting som du skal svare på. Og vi fik også en argumentation hvor vi skal give vores mening om emnet som de gav os og vores grunde for vores stilling. Du har 2 1/2 timer at skrive begge to... Jeg blev færdig 1 time tidlig fordi jeg var meget selvsikker om mine to opgaver som jeg skrev. Endelig...noget som var nem!!
5. The writing part has two parts. Today we got an email correspondence which had certain things that we had to address in our answer. We also had to write an argumentation in which we gave our opinion about the subject and the justifications for that opinion. You get 2 1/2 hours to write both.... but I finished one hour early because I felt really confident about my two writing assignments. Finally....something that was easy!
6. Jeg har allerede spurgt Modul 6s lære om hvornår klasser mødes fordi jeg planlægger at tage Modul 6 (som er et først trin til universitetniveau dansk). Måske jeg var lidt for tidligt!
6. I have already spoken to the teacher for Module 6 about what days the class meets because I plan to continue to Module 6 (which is the first step to university-level Danish). Maybe I was a bit premature!
7. Jeg får mine karakter på skriftlig og læsning om 2 uger; og tager min mundtlige del om 3 uger. Efter den mundtlige del, finder jeg ud hvis jeg består Prøve 3.... Ting har været lidt stresset for mig for nylig og jeg har en følelse at stresset bliver lidt længere....
7. I get my grades on the reading and writing portions in two weeks, and take my oral exam in 3 weeks. After the oral portion, I will find out if I have passed Prøve 3....Things have been pretty stressed for me lately, and I have a feeling the stress will hang around just a little longer....
8. Jeg kan ikke tro, at jeg skrev en blog på dansk i aften fordi jeg fortalt Mads da jeg kom hjem... INGEN DANSK I AFTEN! Mit hoved har ondt! :o)
8. I cannot believe that I wrote a blog in Danish today because as soon as I got home today, I told Mads.... NO MORE DANISH TONIGHT! My head hurts! :o)

WOW...that does sound like an intensive test! But I am confident that you (and Patti) did an excellent job.
Now you can relax...at least for a little while.
Sounds like a really tough test! I do the same thing you mentioned on # 4 on my PAPIB Spanish tests. It is very tough, especially if the answer could be about 20 different words or verbs.
I think you basically sat for the Danish AP exam today....
I, on the other hand, used the entire time possible for the writing and could have used another 30 min!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I was thinking about you & Patti yesterday... hope all the best for you two.
Think this applies for both of you in this situation.. "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" (in danish!!)
That's intense! But good on you for writing your post in Danish anyway!
And look how far you've come since this!
