This post is not intended to warrant any comments or response; it is merely a post that I feel is very necessary in light of Monday's events.
Each of us who has a blog has it for a different purpose. I have made no secret about my purpose from day one-- my blog is for me to write about the things I see, experience, and learn while living in this new place that I choose to call home.
Some of my posts are inconsequential in the grand scheme of things because most people will not get as excited as I do about the way that windmill looks with the sun setting behind it.
Some of my posts are meant to be funny because that is the way that I can poke fun at the things in Denmark that I may not like all that much, but that I am trying to get used to like the size of the tiny refrigerators here or that I have to really want Ben & Jerry's badly to pay 10 bucks for it.
Some of my posts are meant to be lightly educational as I discover things like the differences in the school system here as compared to the school system in the United States.
And finally some of my posts are meant to give my opinions on things that I learn about Danish politics, culture, food, holidays, etc. My opinions are not expressed as the gospel truth or as a way to convince others to see things my way. They are merely that, my opinion based on my own personal research and based on the in-depth discussions I have with my husband who has been a Dane.......well, pretty much all his life.
Some blog writers post things that are designed to incite arguments and emotions which is fine if that is the intention of the writer. However, that is not my intention. When I share my opinion about things it is so that my mom, and my sister, and others who know me best can hear about what is happening in DK and read how it affects me.... I have never made my thoughts a proclamation of right and wrong.
If I read a blog that I find offensive, I close the page.
If I read a blog that posts something I do not agree with, I close the page.
If I read a blog that writes about something awful or negative, I usually find a way to leave a comment that is meant to shine a positive light on whatever the awful thing was....maybe as a way to encourage the person that shared it that day. Sometimes it works; sometimes it does not.
My blog is called Mads and Kelli.... a little bit of Texas in Denmark. And it is just that. The story of the two of us and our life each day as we try to keep a little bit of Texas alive and kicking in the lovely country that I choose to call my home now. If this is not the kind of blog you want to read, that is totally ok. I write my blog for me, not for you. (ok, I write it for my mom, too!)
However if you would like to hear more about how a 30-something American views things (both big and small) in her home in Denmark, I invite you to stick around and see what happens next. You will either leave, scratching your chin in wonder, nodding your head thoughtfully, cracking up laughing, or saying "awwwww" because I do happen to have the cutest dog on the planet and I am married to the hottest Viking this side of the Mason Dixon line. :o)
Either way, I will continue to write because I am quite sure that the story of Mads and Kelli has only just begun.....

Excellent post, Kelli. We all do blog for different reasons. Your positive shine on things is a reason I keep coming back! We may not always agree with others, and vice versa, but that's life. For example: I do agree that you have a mighty cute dog...but world's cutest? Hmmm...I have a dachshund who disagrees!
I don't comment a lot but your blog is on my google reader and one I always look forward to reading. I love your blog for all the reasons you listed above. I love learning about your insights about Denmark and what you are experiencing, I laugh with you when you post about PB and other things you miss about the U.S, and mostly I truly enjoy reading your POSITIVE outlook about being here.
I look forward to reading more about your journey in DK.
Side note: Also it's like my fun homework :) Trying to read in it Dansk first and see if I can understand.
I'm so sorry Kelli, but I MUST disagree with you. While Albert is adorable and cuddly, I would say I have SIX of the cutest dogs ever..Albert is right up there though!!
And as far as the HOTTEST VIKING this side of the mason dixon line...AGAIN, I'm gonna have to call ya on that one, mine is pretty delicious too!!

I really enjoy reading your blog. I'm a Dane living in the US, so to me it's very interesting reading about your experiences in Denmark. I have some of the same laughs and frustrations as you about the differences between DK and US - but the other way around.
I don't write a comment so often, but I can tell you that I READ your blog every day - it makes me happy and it opens my eyes for things I'm taking for granted ... Thank you Kelli and Mads.

I think you will find that most people will continue to read your blog even if they disagree with your political standpoint on some things. :-)
I didn't respond the other day because, well, I get frustrated very easily over things like that. I am the type of person that believes if a person moves to another country, then be like that country. Otherwise, move! And Peter, being Danish, has a very negative viewpoint about immigrants who move to DK to only live off of the very generous social system.
When I think of the problem Denmark is having with immigrants the same way we have it here in the US. I have no problem with immigrants coming to the US and keeping their customs. I LOVE learning about new customs! However, do not expect me to remove my Christmas decorations from my yard because you don't believe in Christmas. I do not plan to move to a non-Christian nation and expect them to adopt/accept my Christian traditions.
I know there are some people who believe that developed nations should accept and embrace everyone, and to an extent that is true. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that Denmark or the US or Britain should have to give up their national identity. Just because the Danes want to remain a Danish nation does not make then xenophobes. It completely irritates me when non-Danish people call Danes xenophobes. They aren't! Danes are very proud of their country and their history and their traditions and culture, and they want to keep it. I find nothing wrong with that.
Yes, Danes can be a tad arrogant at times (I know, I live with one!), but don't call them racist or xenophobes.

You caused quite a stir there! Didn't read the post until just now but must say some of the comments were a bit harsh and unforgiving. I've noticed that on other blogs too - one wrote a "yay!" post back when it was announced that Sarah Palin was running for Vice President and I think she got about 500 comments, about half of which were verging on hate mail and the other half was viciously defending her viewpoints while slaying any Democrat readers in the process. Phew! I'm Danish and very unsure what to think about the "go-home-money" but I just wanted to say that I really like your blog and your tackling the Danish language (which gets better and better), and I'm glad you will continue to write!
