Samtaler.... Conversations

Every year we must hold "formative conversations" with our 2nd and 3rd year students at the gymnasium. It takes about 2 full lessons to hold them all (since an average gymnasium class has about 28 kids). I was a little worried about using 2 whole classes for this because you know, I have so much to teach them! :-)

I finished with all of my "samtaler" last Thursday, and can now say without any doubt that the experience was WELL WORTH the time it took away from instruction. I talked with each and every student, one on one, about his perspective on the class, how he is doing in English A Level, and his goals for himself for the rest of this year and next year. Since we have our students for 3 years at the gymnasium, these conversations give us lots of great information about our students and help us plan better for them in the future.

They also gave me lots of great feedback about our class and my methods. I teach quite differently from my Danish colleagues (and heck, quite differently from many of my American colleagues as well! LOL), so it was really great to hear that they are all very satisfied with our class, our lessons, and the novels that we are reading together for class.

I have lots of things planned for my classes in the coming months, including projects that I will do with two of my former colleagues in Texas. We will teach together while our students learn together....across the Atlantic! I love technology and all of its possibilities!

Okay, how much will it cost me to send my four children to Denmark so you can be their English teacher?

I think conversations like what you describe are SO IMPORTANT. Meeting with the kids to do their IB plans is my favorite part of the year-- even though I don't know all of the kids, hearing what they want to do during and after high school and celebrating their academic success during 9th grade is so awesome.
