I have not been writing on my blog very much recently because my plate has been really full. And it seems as if everything on it is some kind of "Alphabet soup"... and the big things are IBO and SRO. The IBO is sending a team to Herning Gymnasium on January 27 and 28 to approve our IB program. I have been working on our application since last January and have been preparing our teachers and school for these days so they are pretty important.
På den samme tid, har jeg SRO... Hvad er SRO? Studieretningopgaver...
At the same time, I have SRO... What is SRO? Studieretningopgaver.... Yeah, I am certain that these 20 letters explain it really well...LOL
At the gymnasium the students have a major project in their third year called the SRP (studieretningproject) which is an extended essay that they write in either 2 or 3 subjects in their study line. They choose a topic that they want to write about and then have to connect that topic to 2/3 of their subjects. SRP is a perfect step that prepares them to write their theses at the university and it is a requirement to graduate the gymnasium.
SRO is a preparation to the SRP and is written in the 2nd year. Since I have two classes of 2nd year students ....58 of them in fact. Most of the students at the gymnasium (in fact, almost 100% of them) write SRO and SRP in Danish (even if their topic is a work of English literature), but I received approval to offer to my kids to write in English if they would like to since they have had English class in 100% English for over a year now, so they are definitely ready for this task! Of my 58 students, 51 are writing in English! First time in the history of Herning Gymnasium.....
Eleverne vælgte en bog from listen "Top 100 Banned/Challenged Books in the US" som de læser nu.
One class (2C) is writing about censorship and the effect it has on society. The students chose a book from a list I gave to them of the "Top 100 Banned/Challenged books in the US" which they are reading now. The literary analysis of the book and their social science research about censorship will be the foundation of their papers. My other class is writing about the multicultural US and how achieving the American Dream is more difficult for certain groups of people. They have been reading a novel (from a list of multicultural literature that I made from them) that focuses either on African Americans, Hispanic Americans, or Asian Americans. They have to tell about this group's "place" in the American society and why things are the way they are for them....
They get 2 days free from school (tomorrow and the day after plus the weekend) to write their SRO which must be turned in on Monday at 8:05am. So yeah, pretty much after Monday, I will HAVE NO LIFE..... since each SRO is between 7-10 pages, and I have 58 students.... Luckily they are writing about incredibly interesting subjects and they have all read different books, so I will definitely not be bored! Yeah, I'll see you in March! :o)

What a great project - but that sure is a lot of work!! (I used to be a teacher...)
Before you drown in marking, please please tell us the answer to those yam-like objects in your mystery pic post!
"51 vælgte at skrive på engelsk" - that is so awesome and a huge clap on your shoulders, Kelli :-)
The topics are very interesting...wish I could take your class - do you offer the course online???
I was wondering who did the grading and then I got to the end of the post :( You poor, poor girl! At least the snow should be gone by March :)
Here's the good news - they are writing the papers in English. Can you imagine if you had to grade 58 essays in Danish?!
I can only the impact you have made on these kids...lucky lucky kids.
Good luck... hope you get your life back! : )
When I hear about the intensive writing these kids are doing, I find it so impressive...and even more so, that they are doing it in a second language.
I STRUGGLE to get my 9th graders to write half a page on a topic. They think I'm insanely cruel. It just blows my mind sometimes. I tell them, "In three years you will be an adult. You will be voting. You will be working a job (hopefully). It is imperative that you can communicate your thoughts in writing." They just shrug and seem not to care that they can't write more than 3-4 sentences on a topic.
I'm so depressed that I can't work at the HG with you. What an amazing assignment you gave your students and I know they are creating some incredible writing for you to read. As always I remain in awe of you. Love you so much.
I am glad Nettie pointed out what she did because it really does make me even more excited about this because English is a second (or even THIRD) language for 100% of my kids!!!! Today on their first writing day, I received over 50 emails from them to get feedback as we cannot edit these for them.... Only guide them. It was like having an online writers workshop. Very very cool day!
