On March 13, 2010 I learned something new about Denmark....
Something called "the round birthday". I received so many incredible gifts from my colleagues and could not understand why?! Yes, of course, they are wonderful people, but why did they give me such nice gifts on my birthday? So I asked a Danish friend and she educated me all about the ROUND BIRTHDAYS!
Of course we have "round" birthdays in the US, but they are not nearly as big as they are in Denmark....When you turn 30, 40, 50, or 60 in the US, you are celebrated, but in Denmark the round birthdays are really BIG EVENTS! Our school (like most offices in Denmark) have a special fund that all the employees pay a little money into so that our "social committee" can use the money to buy gifts for the folks that have a round birthday!

Tomorrow we have another round birthday in Denmark..... Queen Margaret is turning 70! So I am sure you can imagine the celebration that will be held in Copenhagen! Happy Birthday Queen Margaret!
Mads and I are celebrating our round birthdays with "Road Trip 99" when we head to the west coast of the US.... now I am wondering what the Queen will do to celebrate turning 70 (besides the big party that all of Denmark is having for her! Maybe she will take a Road Trip somewhere?!)

Yet another difference between USA and Scandinavia....here the round birthdays are huge also. You're expected to do something big...my 30th though slipped by pretty much unnoticed...I've told Stig for my 40th, we need to go somewhere...and I've been thinking about a party but....ugh....I'd rather go somewhere and relax...hahaha...
Hipp Hurra til Dronning Margaret!
It's amazing, isn't it? The round birthdays are very BIG over here too.
Your round trip sounds a good way to celebrate a round birthday!
