We recently sang this song in our "morning gathering" at the gymnasium. I had never heard it before, but was shocked at how excited the students became about it.We sing a traditional Danish song each week at the morning-gathering (which I think is a really cool tradition!)...and the students participate...but with this song, they did more than just participate...they really SANG! So I decided to dig a little deeper and find out more about the song.
I Danmark er jeg født (af H.C. Andersen, 1850)
In Denmark, was I born (by Hans Christian Andersen, 1850)
The song's words are really powerful and incredibly important to all generations in Denmark. In fact, when I asked Mads about the song, he instantly busted out, singing!
Hans Christian Andersen wrote the words more than 150 years ago, but I think that in the Danes' minds, the words are timeless.... (and a big thanks to Christina, my student, for her help with the translation!)

In Denmark was I born and it is here I have my home and my roots and my world.
The Danish language, you are my mother's voice, and so sweetly bless my heart.
You Danish fresh beaches, where old times' Giants' graves stand between apple orchards and the gardens, buzzing with bees.
Dig elsker jeg! Danmark, mit fædreland!
It's you I love! Denmark, my native land!
Where else does the summer make the flowerbeds more rich than here , down to the open beach?
Hvor står fuldmånen over kløverengenså dejligt som i bøgens fædreland?
Where does the full moon stand so lovely over the clover meadow like in the beech trees' native land?
Danish fresh beaches, where the Danish flag waves, - God gave it to us- God gave us the best victory!
Dig elsker jeg! Danmark, mit fædreland!
It's you I love! Denmark, my native land!
Once upon a time you ruled the entire north, in command over England; now you are called weak; a small country and yet across the world, you hear the Danes' song and chisel blow.
Du danske, friske strand, plovjernet guldhorn finder, Gud giv dig fremtid som han gav dig minder!
Danish fresh beaches, the colter golden horn finds God give you future like he gave you memories!
Dig elsker jeg! Danmark, mit fædreland!
It's you I love! Denmark, my native land!
You are the land where I was born, where I have my home and my roots; where my world is, where the language is my mother's sweet voice like a sweet song in my heart.
Du danske, friske strand med vilde svaners rede,I grønne øer, mit hjertes hjem hernede!
Danish fresh beaches with wild swans' nests, the green islands, my heart's home is here!
Dig elsker jeg! Danmark, mit fædreland!
It's you I love! Denmark, my native land!

Very patriotic song, and isn't it interesting that it isn't your "typical" Dane singing it in the video...looks like the singer is from another land...but what a wonderful tribute to the land he calls home.
Norwegians also have a lot of patriotic songs and it makes me wonder why we don't...but then again, we do...we just don't hear them that often unless you're at a sports event!!!
I like the melody. Although I must admit to being skeptical to very patriotic songs... can't help but think that they foster too much nationalism.
:) I have heard it before, but never knew the title or lyrics!! It was like listening with "undertekst". :)
Mmm - thanks it's been a while since I have heard this. I love that song as well :)
Amy- great observation! He is Moroccan (has Moroccan parents) but was born in DK.... pretty cool representative, I think!
Hey, aren't you headed to Hamburg soon? Thanks for keeping me educated on Denmark... I feel like a bit of weenie living there for so long and not learning any of this. Guess that is because I married a Canadian and you have yourself a VIKING. :)
