One potato, two potato....

Three potatoes, VACATION!
Yep, it's that time of year in land of HC Andersen!
One of the few times of the year when I can talk about "week 42" (since the Danes refer to the entire calendar by WEEK numbers) and actually know to which week I am referring!

It's time for KARTOFFELFERIEN... which translated really does mean "POTATO HOLIDAY"! Since 1986 Denmark has been calling it "Efterårsferien" AKA "Fall Break", but in the hearts of the farmers of Jylland, it is still POTATO HOLIDAY!

A major change has happened since the name changed; now kids do not get a week of school holiday to help the family harvest the potato crop. Instead, they and their families find cheap airfares to places like Spain, Egypt, and Turkey!

So instead of harvesting the potatoes, it is the Danes' last chance to soak up all the sunlight they can because right around the corner from Potato Holiday are those long dark winter days that we all...... love.

Wonder if I should get a "Potato Outfit" like the one below to celebrate our week's vacation from school? And should I order one for Mads as well??
(And before you ask, YES, these are really for sale in DK!!! Part of some "potato partnership"!!)

We have a similar holiday here, now they call it Høstferie..but it was used for the same purposes many years ago- the kids got free a week to help harvest the potatoes..now of course the only ones harvesting potatoes are polish people here in Norway...children are too lazy for that! Nice with holidays though don't you think?? ;-))

Gives new meaning to "hot potato" I suppose.

Thanks for your post. My second cousin and her husband took the opportunity to go to Turkey for "potato holiday". Thanks to your own recent trip I saw pictures of what they probably saw and did. She had just come back from a big business trip to China and was exhausted. A trip that was not 8-5. She needed to recoup.
Me? I am lazy. I would not go back on a plane, I would come back and crawl under the sheets and not come up for 3 days.
